Breynia retusa (Euphorbiaceae) is growing naturally in tropical and sub tropical region of world. It contains active principles like alkaloids, glycosides, resins, tannins, etc which are concentrated in parts like bark, leaves, roots, seeds. Plants of this family have been used to treat cancer. Leaf juice is taken for body pain, skin inflammation, hyperglycemia, diarrhoea and as diuretic. Bark as astringent and diuretic, fruits have been used for dysentery, roots for fits and meningitis, twigs for toothache and in promoting lactation. The juice of the stem is used for conjunctivitis. It is an astringent to the bowels and also useful in inflammation and diseases of the blood. Leaves employed to hasten suppuration. So far, various phytochemical reported from this species such as reducing sugars, phenolics (most abundant phenols are gallic acid, ellagic acid, coumaric acid, ferullic acid and vanillic acid), alkaloids, tannins, glycosides, flavones and saponins, proteins. In this review importance of this species and scope for taking research with this plant is discussed....
Various species of genus Ocimum have been extensively studied for their pharmacological activity. Ocimum basilicum Linn is expected to possess many constituents among them triterpenoids are also major constituents. So that it might be possible that Ocimum basilicum Linn may possess anthelmintic activity. In the present work ethanolic and aqueous extract of leaves of Ocimum basilicum Linn were evaluated for its anthelmintic activity against earthworm and tapeworm at three different concentrations (25, 50, 100 mg/ml). The anthelmintic activity of both extracts was comparable with standard drug (piperazine citrate, 50 mg/ml) having same concentration. Animal treated with distilled water was taken as a normal control. Standard drug solution was prepared in distilled water. Activity was evaluated by noting the time required for paralysis and death of worms by extracts. The data shows that ethanolic extract (100 mg/ml concentration) possess comparable anthelmintic activity with standard drug. The results show that the plant has the potential to be used as anthelmintic....
Euphorbia heterophylla leaf is used in traditional medical practices as laxative, antigonorrheal, migraine and wart cures. The plant lattices have been used as fish poison, insecticide and ordeal poisons. In some parts of Kogi State, Nigeria, the leaves are used as anticonvulsant and cough remedy. The leaves of Euphorbia heterophylla have been reported to contain quercetin. Diterpenoids have been reported in the root of Euphorbia heterophylla. The skin irritant, tumor promoting anti-tumor/anti-cancer and recently anti-HIV activities of euphorbia species have also been reported in Euphorbia heterophylla leaf. Though it was reported with various pharmacological activities and filling the gap by exploring the morpho anatomical characters of the leaf of Euphorbia heterophylla for the identification of genuine variety from the adulterants....
